Mike Basich off grid cabinThere’s a good reason why Mike Basich has his own category on my site. (Read All Mike Basich Posts) We’ll maybe 2 reasons, he’s a pro snowboarder and has built an amazing off grid cabin with all the features I wish we had! He’s got 40 acres near Donner Pass California with it’s own homemade chairlift, homemade wood-fired hot tub with waterfall and beer cooler built into the deck, Massive windows that open like doors.

As you can see it’s a very special handmade cabin built with stacked rocks, wood and steel. He took 5 years to build it himself mostly by hand. He made those huge steel and glass windows that open up to make a huge open air wall. Mike had to weld the steel frames and fit the glass to his custom pentagon shape. Solar power provides some electricity for essentials and a wood stove provides heat at night while southern facing window provide solar gain during the day.

This is the first time I learned that he built his cabin around the golden ratio law set by Devinci. This is said to make the space fit to the body better.
